Irregular Bleeding
By peace | April 2, 2006

If a woman has episodes of bleeding which are irregular in duration, in amount and occur unpredictably, it is inconvenient, disturbing and produces anxiety.
She should see her doctor who will examine her and must perform a diagnostic curettage, usually at a time when the woman is not bleeding, so that the most information can be obtained. With the information obtained from the examination and from the laboratory, the doctor will be better able to discuss the problem with the woman and to advise her.
The choices of treatment are to use hormones, or to do a hysterectomy. If the woman wants to have more children, hormones would be used; but in older women or women whose family is complete, both treatments are appropriate.
The advantage of hormones is that an operation can be avoided, at least for many women. This can only be determined after full discussion between the woman and her gynaecologist, who has spoken with her family doctor, as he knows her family circumstances, which may be important in making a decision. When this sequence is followed the results of hysterectomy are good.
