External Structures Of Human Heart
By peace | May 18, 2006
The human heart is small, a little larger than a clenched fist. Relatively simple in function, your heart’s primary purpose is to pump…24 hours a day, 70 to 80 times a minute. With each beat, the heart pumps blood that delivers life-sustaining oxygen and nutrients to 300 trillion cells. Each day the average heart “beats” (or expands and contracts) 100,000 times and pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood. In a 70-year lifetime, an average human heart beats more than 2.5 billion times, pumping approximately 1 million barrels of blood.

Interesting Facts about the heart:
- Cardiac muscle never completely relaxes—it is always maintained in a degree of tone.
- The average heartbeat is 72 times per minute, 100,000 times a day, 38 million times a year, and 2.5 billion times by the time you turn 70years old.
- The average heart pumps 2.4 ounces of blood per heartbeat, 1.3 gallons per minute, 1,900 gallons per day, almost 700,000 gallons per year, or 48 million gallons by the time someone is 70 years old.
