Successful Learning

By peace | November 28, 2006

The process of successful learning needs your time and patience.

The old fashioned idea of teaching was that the children should play a passive part. They were completely in the hands of their teachers, to be moulded into a certain pattern set by formal education, and t o emerge as shcool leavers full of facts whihc, they had all too often learnt off by heart and parrot-woes. Often, none of these facts were related to life. The children were made to absorb them as a sponge absorbs water. This attitude was adequately summarized by Addison in the eighteenth century. “What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the soul,”he said.

Nowadays, such attitudes to teaching have completely changed and, while a certain store of facts must be learnt for examination purposes and indeed as a background to ordinary living, today such facts are not the ‘be all’ and ‘end all’. Each child is regarded as an individual and not as a cypher in an educational machine. The teacher’s aim is to develop the full potential of each child. He must be taught to respond to and to participate in the activities connected with learning and to co-operate with the teacher so that everything he does is geared to his own life and to developing his control over his own environment. Today therefore, the facts and the subjects studied are secondary to the development of the child’s whole personality. Hence, subjects cover a much wider range these days, from technical and practical subjects to current affairs and commerce.

Not only has education system changed, parents attitudes towards children’s learning also have changed. More parents are sending their children to tuition centre , learning centre or private tuition. All these are basically the same things, whereby the children attend extra lessons after their school curriculum time.

Private tuitions as against what is being done in regular school are resorted to in certain cases where the pupil is not able to follow the classes well, where he wants to improve upon his performance, where the parents want to make the pupil sit at his studies and in some cases as a matter of prestige.

Whatever may be the reasons for private tuition, it can certainly complement and supplement the class work provided of course the teacher and his student cooperate. It can be complementary where the lessons done in the class have not been fully understood by the student. He may require to be told more than once, what is said and done in the class may not have caught his brains. To impress upon him the lesson will have to be redone at home, in learning center or at tuition center. When the student is not capable of recalling what has been done in the class, tuition at home or tuition at the learning center may be the answer.

In addition, private tuition is necessary where the students would not by himself sit at his studies. Such students have no motivation for studies at all. Some students may also enrol themselves in tuition classes or learning center as a means of enrichment classes for them. So you see, private tuition can serve two purposes — for poor students to improve themselves and for good students who want to excel further in their studies.
