Relaxation reduces muscular tension caused by stress and improves your health.
Relaxation is a skill that needs to be learned and mastered. When stress makes you tense from time to time, there are a number of techniques that can help you to relax.
Many relaxation exercises can be done anywhere, at any time. They are most successful if done regularly, not just when you feel you are close to breaking point. Acquiring the ability to relax without having to make a special effort will then be particularly helpful when you are under more pressure.
Relaxing To Relieve Pain
As well as making your muscles less tense, daily relaxation has been shown to relieve pain in some types of recurrent headache or backache. It may also lower the blood pressure of some people being treated for hypertension. However, no one should stop taking medication for hypertension without their doctor’s acknowlege and agreement.
Ways To Relax
- Slow your breathing. Take deep, even breaths for five minutes
- Close your eyes and count backwards from 20, saying each number silently as you breathe out
- Shut your eyes and imagine a beautiful scene. For five minutes, explore the sights, sounds and smells, savouring every detail of this picture
- Take strenous exercise to help reduce muscle tension and anxiety
Breathing Exercises
Breathing exercises can be used to help you to relax. The habit of taking deep breaths is an effective weapon against the build-up tension.
- Sit in a quiet room with your feet flat on the floor
- Become aware of the chair supporting your full weight and let your shoulders relax
- Breathe deeply and slowly, breathing out fo rtwice as long as you breathe in (you can judge this by counting silently to yourself)
- Continue for five minutes, but stop if you begin to feel dizzy
- While you are concentrating on your breathing, try to clear your mind of all other thoughts
- Do this breathing exercise twice a day, every day
