Man’s body is adapted for regular, vigorous exercise, but in today’s push-button, microchip, automated world, it all too often does not get it. Exercise helps to keep bones, joints and muscles young. It can reduce the risk of heart attacks, and increase the chances of survival if you suffer one. It helps slimming by burning up the energy in food, and works off the tensions of everyday living. It can help to keep you in a healthy state of mind and cut down anxiety and depression. Above all, it promotes fitness.
What is fitness?
Even though most people know that fitness is important, they may not know what fitness really means. There is no scientific definition of fitness, but, as those who are fit will vouch, it is more than the mere absence of illness or disease, more than simply feeling well. It is a manifestation of positive health, the physical expression of viatlity. It is having the capacity to cope with the physical expression of vitality. It is having the capacity to cope with the physical demands most people face each day… and having a little extra left in reserve.
Fit For Life
Fitness for life is not the same as sporting excellence. Fitness is simply the ability to cope with the physical workload of everyday activities, while still having energy in reserve to meet any sudden unexpected demands. The average adult should be able to carry heavy shopping, dig the garden, or run for the bus, without becoming breathless and exhausted.
The first and most crucial step to fitness is making the decision to get started. Obviously, it is going to mean extra effort — there is no lazy way to get fit. Unfortunately, many people think they are fit when they are not. Just because you are rarely ill, does not necessarily mean that you are in good shape physically. The essential thing is to start gently and build up gradually over the weeks. The best way to stay fit is to exercise at least three times a week.
Although you probably know that exercise is good for your health, like many people, you may think that exercise is not for you. The list of excuses for not exercising is endless: too busy, too tired, or too out of condition. But the benefits you will get from exercise far outweigh the effort it takes.
Exercise will make your heart and lungs more efficient and your muscles stronger, as well as improving your figure and posture and enhancing your sense of wellbeing. You will also feel more relaxed, sleep better, and be able to deal more effectively with day-to-day stresses. By continuing to stay active throughout your life, you are likely to live longer and stay in good health. The habit of exercising regularly will keep you fit for life.
Do Not Smoke. Stop Smoking!
Cigarette smoking reduces stamina. A few minutes after someone smokes a cigarette, the air-tubes(bronchioles) in the lungs shrink, almost doubling the resistance to airflow. While that makes little difference at rest, it leads rapidly to breathlessness during exercise.
Smoking raises the heart-rate by about 20-30 beats a minute, which reduces stamina. Nicotine in the bloodstream is also associated with the silting up of arteries with fatty deposits, reducing the blood flow to active muscles including the heart, and increasing the risk of thromobosis.
The fewer cigarettes you smoke, the more good exercise will do you. Exercise cannot cancel out the effects of smoking.
