Importance Of Fitness
By peace | December 2, 2006
For many people, the words ‘fitness’ and ‘exercise’ conjure up visions of agonising physical-training sessions in the school gym or the loneliness of the long-distance runner. In fact, far from being unpleasant, the whole point of exericse and fitness is to increase your enjoyment of life.
There are so many different ways to exercise and keep yourself in good physical shape that it is not difficult to find an activity or mix of activities that you really enjoy. Because keeping fit means taking regular, moderately vigorous exercise, it is important to choose something that gives you an incentive to continue.
Apart from the physcial benefits of exercise, research has shown that exercise can help to relieve anxiety and lift depression. Athletes describe the ‘natural high’ that they get from vigorous exercise, and that is a very apt description of what happens in their brain. Scientists studying this effect have found that exercise seems to stimulate the release of certain natural hormones within the brain which mimic the action of morphine and have a pleasurable and pain-suppressing effect.
Being fit can also help to combat degenerative diseases. Inactivity can lead to problems ranging from muscle and joint stiffness to obesity, or from palpitations to an increased risk of heart attack. Regular, moderately vigorous activity with at least 20 minutes of stamina-building exercises twice a week, and preferably more often, reduces the likelihood of these conditions.
Aerobic exercise gets the heart working to pump blood through the heart more quickly and with more force than normal. As blood is pumped faster, it must be oxygenated more quickly, which quickens respiration. Aerobic exercise strengthens the heart and boosts healthy cholestrol levels. Low impact aerobics include walking and swimming. Running, tennis and dance are high impact aerobics.
