I realize that actions are controllable, and people must be held accountable for their actions, but I do not believe people choose their emotions. While I can and do control my physical and verbal actions, I find it very difficult to control my emotions. Although on the outside I may appear calm, on the inside it is often quite the opposite. My muscles tense. I feel my heart pounding in not only my chest, but my throat and my stomach. Every nerve in my body feels as if it is transmitting fire. The burning sensation floods my body as if traveling in my blood. While my speech and actions remain calm, my face often betrays me. Not so much that people think there's something terribly wrong or they see that I feel I might, at any moment, begin beating the person nearest me simply because of their close proximity. But just enough so that they ask if everything's ok. I know that my anger is usually unjustified. That is why I choose not to act upon it. But to say that anger is largely "self-induced" and "voluntary" is quite foolish in my opinion. Anger, like any other emotion, may be called upon for certain situations. And indeed, it may occationally be self-induced. Just as love is sometimes self-induced. But far more often than not, it is a result of hormones. I assume the misfiring of neurons also plays a part in chronic anger, as well as the overproduction of certain hormones such as epinephrine. While we may be able to obtain some control over these emotions, as we are somewhat able to control depression, obcessive-comlulsive disorder, and other brain chemical abnormalities, I strongly believe that it is not completely the angry person's fault. I believe nature plays as large a role in anger as does personality. Nurture, I believe plays a lesser role than the others. However, this last assumption I base on personal experience as I myself had a quite blessed upbringing, yet seem to suffer from some form of chronic anger.

"A person creates anger by his or her evaluations and choices, and thus needs to take responsibility for the anger."

ya, nothing like making someone who is pissed off even more pissed of by blaming them. Way to think that one through, Glasser. Seriously though... emotions are not a matter of choice, you can only choose to act upon them.
