Faults Of Men
By peace | May 31, 2007

There are many weapons which cause harm to oneself, for example wine, sex, fame, benefit and power. Sword-play is also one of them. A minor skill does harm and is nothing to be conceited about.
According to Zhuang Zi, there are eight weaknesses and four shortcomings of men, which you must watch out for. These are:
The eight weaknesses of men
1. Meddling : To do something you ought not to do
2. Wheedling : Rambling on despite having your suggestion rejected
3. Fawning : Figuring out people’s minds and pleasing them with words
4. Toading : Agreeing with others without judgment
5. Back-biting : Criticizing people’s weakness behind their backs
6. Trouble-making : Breaking up friendship between two persons
7. Intriguing : Praising the vicious while ostracizing people we detest
8. Slippery : Not telling good from evil while being ingratiating
Outwardly these eight weaknesses create trouble for people, inwardly they can damage the true self. They are qualities which a man of wisdom keeps clear of.
The four Shortcomings of men
1. Ambitious : A penchant for talking on big jobs to seek credit and fame
2. Presumptuous : Being self-righteous and self-important
3. Stubborness : defending one’s fault while resenting exhortation from others
4. Bigotry : Endorsing those with the same views as ours and condemning those with different views from ours

A man dressed in snow-white clothes is not necessarily clean at heart. It is better for one to remain poor than to get rich by wicked deeds.
