LIve Webcast: Advances in Colorectal Cancer Therapies
Colorectal cancer is the second most frequent cancer among men and women in Singapore. Its incidence increases with a sedentary lifestyle, obesity and a high fat diet, low in fruits and vegetables. Colon cancer is also the second-leading cause of cancer death in the US. In 2001, more than 57,000 people died of the disease, according to the American Cancer Society. In Singapore, the number of Singaporeans under the age of 50 with colon cancer is on the rise. About 20 percent of colorectal cancer patients are currently below that age, compared to less than 5 percent in 1989, according to the findings of the study at Singapore General Hospital.
Colorectal cancer develops in the inner wall lining of the colon and rectum. The cancer may start as a polyp or benign lump in the inner wall lining. Undetected, it will grow, become malignant, and spread. Removing a polyp early will prevent it from becoming malignant. Early detection may raise the survival rates to as high as 90%.
Test For Colorectal Cancer:
1. Colonoscopies allow doctors to see inside the colon and rectum to detect polyps by using a flexible hollow tube with a camera chip on the end. The disease can be prevented if detected early. The cost of colonoscopy can range from between $300 and $400 to more than $500 in the private hospital. Screening Test For Colorectal Cancer
2. Faecal Occult Blood Test
This is a preliminary screening test for colorectal cancer, which is cancer of the colon and rectum. It tests for presence of blood in the stools. Those over 50 or who have a family history of colon cancer are advised to have a faecal occult blood test done annually.
(Note: Free faecial occult blood test is only available to Singaporeans and Singapore PRs aged 50 years and above.) - Singapore Cancer Society
