Blood Circulation

By peace | August 10, 2007

Your heart pumps blood through your blood vessels to supply every cell of your body with oxygen (from the lungs) and nutrients. With each beat, your heart contracts, squeezing blood into the arteries and pumping it around your body. Blood is returned to the heart through the veins. The walls of the arteries are elastic, so they stretch slightly with each heartbeat to accommodate the surge of blood.

Tremendous force is needed to pump blood out of your heart and around your body. If you have high blood pressure, the stress on the arteries is intense. As a result, the smooth lining of the arteries become rough and their walls become thicker. Over time, this causes the arteries to narrow and become less elastic, a process known as arteriosclerosis or hardening of the arteries.

How blood flows around the body:

Blood is pumped from the heart into the lungs where oxygen is added to it (this is called oxygenation). The oxygen-rich blood then returns to the heart, from where it is pumped to the brain and around the rest of the body, supplying oxygen to all of the cells. It returns, deoxygenated, to the heart, where the cycle begins again.
