Fatigue
By peace | August 13, 2007

When you are ill, you may be advised to take it easy and rest for a few days, because the doctor believes your illness is due to fatigue. Western doctors in general are not very clear about exactly how fatigue causes disease or intensifies it, but doctors of traditional Chinese Medicine are more specific about the relation between fatigue and disease.
There are five types of fatigue harmful to health: prolonged use of the eyes (excessive reading, watching television) is harmful to your blood; lying down for too long is harmful to your energy; prolonged sitting (at the computer, on a long airplane trip) is harmful to your muscles; prolonged standing is harmful to your bones, and prolonged walking is harmful to your tendons.
Excessive fatigue is particularly harmful to the spleen; it can cause a disease known as “spleen deficiency”. Its symptoms include slightly cold hands and feet, abdominal swelling, skinniness or fatness with a poor appetite, chronic diarrhea, indigestion, the urge to lie down, morning sickness during pregnancy, excessive menstrual bleeding, irregular menstruation, anemia and pale complexion.
Excessive sex also cause fatigue and it is particularly harmful to the kidneys, as it can cause a disease known as “kidney deficiency”. Its symptoms are hair loss, frequent miscarriage and period pain in women, lower back pain, toothache, ringing in the ears, diabetes, heart palpitation, fear of cold, dizziness, short breath, cold feet, frequent urination, impotence in men and infertility in women, and cold sensations in the genitals.
