Danger of Hypertension

By peace | August 18, 2007

Some doctors call high blood pressure “the silent killer” because it stealthily damages the heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other organs with few or no symptoms. In fact about half of all people with high blood pressure are completely unaware of it. Very occasionally, if blood pressure is exceptionally high, people may experience headaches, dizziness and blurred eyesight.

If your blood pressure is high, the doctor will look for signs of organ damage. This involve inspecting the back of your eyes to check for narrowing or thickening of the blood vessels; looking for small haemorrhages inside the eye; listening to your heart to detect any irregularities; checking blood flow in your arteries; and checking the abdomen for signs of kidney enlargement.

Effects of High Blood Pressure on the body

1. Eyes
High blood pressure does not seriously damage vision unless it is very high. However, abnormalities in the small blood vessels of the retina can be clearly seen, even in cases of mildly raised blood pressure. It indicates whether blood pressure has been high for some time.

2. Heart
High blood pressure puts a tremendous strain on the heart. This is partly because less blood is able to reach the heart and also it forces the heart to work harder to pump blood around the body. Over time, this causes the heart to enlarge and then to weaken and the function deteriorates.

3. Kidney
High blood pressure damages the tissue and arterioles in the kidneys, causing them to work less efficiently.

4. Blood Vessels
Untreated high blood pressure causes the blood vessels to narrow and harden and speeds up the development of atherosclerosis, the medical term for furring of the blood vessels, which is linked to heart disease.
