Conflict At Work

By peace | August 28, 2007

Work conflicts can be particularly painful and difficult to resolve just because you spend so much time at work and your livelihood and career progress depend on smooth working relationships. Conflicts in the workplace may arise for some of the following reasons:

1. Changes may have been brought in without sufficient discussion or support. Change creates anxiety, and people who feel anxious may take out their feelings on their colleagues.

2. Someone has been promoted beyond their competence. Their insecurity can be manifested as aggression.

3. A new arrival has shaken the existing hierarchy. Some people react by being very defensive of their position and refusing all suggestions for change or co-operation.

4. There is overt or covert prejudice against individuals or minority groups.

To ask for help, you may approach your immediate line manager. If there is an in-house counsellor, ask for an appointment or talk to your the trade union representative. When you present your case, be very careful to present the problems fairly.

Sexual Harrassment
Sexual Harassment can be defined as unwanted, uninvited and unreciprocated advances, verbal or physical, that make your working environment unpleasant and hinder your ability to do your job well. If you are being sexually or racially buillied, keep a written record of events and speak to someone.
