Liposuction

By peace | September 9, 2007

Liposuction was first developed in the late 1970s by two Italian dermatologic surgeons, Arpad and Giorgio Fischer, to remove undesired fat from nearly all body areas such as the face, neck, chin, breast, abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, knees and so on. It is the removal of excess fat with a small, straw-like instrument called a cannula that is attached to a suction machine. Through a tiny incision, the cannula is inserted and used to vacuum the fat layer that lies deep beneath the skin. The cannula is pushed then pulled through the fat layer, breaking up the fat cells and suctioning them out. It is currently the most common cosmetic procedure performed by plastic surgeons. The purpose of liposuction is to have a more perfect body. Normally after liposuction, there is a resculpting of bulging areas into more attractive contours. Liposuction can remove stubborn areas of fat that don’t respond to traditional weight loss methods.

Nowadays tumescent liposuction is a common procedure used by many plastic surgeons or dermatologic surgeons to safely and effectively remove deep and superficial layers of fatty tissues underneath the skin. This method is performed under local anesthesia and there is little discomfort. Just like any other surgery, liposuction carries some risks too. These include infection, too much fluid loss (which may lead to shock and potentially death), fluid accumulation, nerve damage (can cause numbness or changes in sensation), swelling that can last for several weeks or months after liposuction, Necrosis or skin death (the skin above the liposuction site sloughs off and dies), blood clots or fat clots which can loosen and move to lungs (causing pulmonary embolism), burns, organs damage (eg. intestines or organs may be punctured during abdominal liposuctino), rippling or indentation under the skin if the doctor removes too much fat and scarring. Prolonged exposure to anaesthesia is dangerous and is an important cause for serious liposuction complications too.

Excessive surgical trauma (excessive liposuction) is dangerous and is an important cause for serious liposuction complications. In rare cases, liposuction can lead to death — estimates range from 3 to 100 deaths per 100,000 liposuction procedures. After Liposuction Surgery, many patients have fluid drainage from the liposuction site. Patients are advised not to do heavy work or strenuous activity. They may also take antibiotics to prevent infection too. After 10 days or so, the stitches would be gone. Many patients experience pain, soreness or burning during the healing process, but these symptoms usually go away within three weeks. After a month, swelling will be gone and patients can see their result.

Liposuction is permanent, but it cannot erase obesity. Liposuction is not intended as a method for weight loss. If you would like to improve your body shape and proportion, liposuction can help you by removing hereditary fat deposits that are resistant to both diet and exercise. Liposuction may get rid of your body fats ‘instantly’ but it comes at a cost. Anyone who want to go for liposuction or plastic surgery should always seek a reputable and qualified doctor. […] If I had a chance to go for plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery, I am not going to go for any of it. Though I do not have a perfect body, I am satisfied with my body shape and every part of my body now. Even if I have money, I have excess money and I do not know how to spend my money, I am not going to take any kind of risk with my health and my body to go for breast augmentation or any other kind of plastic surgery. I am lucky that I do not need to think of plastic surgery or liposuction at all. […]
