Our Essential Power

By peace | September 22, 2007

To find your vitality, give it. Throw yourself into life with abandon. Generosity of spirit is a wonderful thing. And so is self-remembering. Use them both in equal measure.

What is the essential power that we possess, the energy to take on life, our inner strength, that force that makes us what we are?

We know we are alive, certain of our identity, and yet we seem to be changing all the time. We seem to be constantly under the sway of some passing whim, mood or emotion. We are perpetually possessed by the situations we meet. No one would be false to themselves willingly, and yet life has a way of drawing us in and encouraging us in the habit of forgetfulness. And the more we forget the less energy we seem to have, and the less freedom.

Self-forgetting would of course by far less of a possibility if we had a clear idea of who we were in the first place. We feel certain we know, but maybe there is more to us than we suspect. It’s not for nothing that self-discovery has long been considered a central aim in life.

Work for inner contentment and stability, regardless of the circumstances you meet. Everytime you’re carried away check to see how far you’ve gone. Then return to the real you.
