What Is Colposcopy?
Colposcopy is a technique for examining potentially abnormal areas of the cervix and vagina using a mounted, binocular-like instrument called a colposcope. Colposcopies are generally done after an abnormal Pap test has come back from the lab. Occasionally it may also be done to help identify reasons for abnormal bleeding or pain during intercourse, or to examine sores on the vulva. Women whose mothers took the drug DES while pregnant with them should have regular colposcopic examinations.
When cancer is suspected, colposcopy combined with a biopsy(tissue sample) can sometimes be used instead of srikier, more expensive surgical procedures such as cone biopsies. Biopsies done during a colposcopic examination are particularly accurate because the colposcope enlarges tissue by 5-30 times and illuminates the areas most prone to cancerous changes.
How Is The Procedure Performed?
Usually done in a doctor’s office, the procedure takes about 20 minutes. The clinician begins by inserting a speculum into the vagina, washing the vagina with acetic acid, and then aiming hte colposcope toward the vagina. Because the colposcope is positioned outside the body, most women feel little if any discomfort, although some find the prolonged speculum exam unpleasant.
Risks and Complications
There are no risks or complications associated with colposcopy itself. If a biopsy is performed, minor bleeding or infection can occur.
