Body Odour
By peace | October 16, 2007

Many body parts — the sweat glands in the underarm and genital regions, the feet, and the mouth, in particular — produce secretions that result in distinctive odours. These odours are generally due not to the secretions themselves but to the naturally occurring bacteria that metabolize the secretions into aromatic by-products.
In many parts of the animal kingdom, body odours plays an important role in sexuality. From insects to primates, attracting a mate depends to a large extent on giving off the right smell. There has been a great deal of discussion of pheromones, the airborne chemical emitted by animals which help regulate many social behaviours, including mating. Although there is some evidence that human secretions may also contain pheromone-like substances or other sexual attractants, it is clear that cultural factors override whatever subtle and perhaps unconscious power these chemical may have over us. An odour that is attractive or irrelevant to one person may be offensive or unbearable to another.
How we respond to body ordour, is partly a matter of personal sensitivity. It is determined largely by our upbringing. There are plenty of people who have come to appreciate, or at least tolerate their own natural odours as well as those of others. For women who do choose to mask or minimize body odours, a number of different options exist, most of which can be accomplish with minimal cost and effort.
