Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is most commonly performed to restore the size and shape of the breast after a mastectomy for breast cancer. Reconstruction can be carried out for many other reasons as well. For example, an injury may result in a misshapen breast, especially if it occurs during childhood or early development. malformations may also occur as part of the developmental process itself, not becoming evident until adolescene.
Every year, many women develop breast cancer, and a certain percentage of them will require the removal of part or all of the breast to treat the disease. Restoring the appearance to as natural a state as possible is the goal of breast reconstruction. The operation may be done at the same time as the cancer surgery or at a later date. Many factors influence the decision about timing. Although it was once feared that reconstruction would interfere with subsequent cancer treatment or detection, it is now well established that reconstruction is safe for the vast majority of women who are otherwise in good health.
Many women worry that seeking reconstruction is frivolous or vain. Nothing could be further from the truth. A number of psychological studies have affirmed the relationship of reconstruction to the restoration of a healthy body image and self-esteem. This does not mean that reconstructive is necessary for a woman to feel good about herself. But if reconstruction feels right, this is a normal and healthy inclination, not vanity.
