Underarm Odour

By peace | October 17, 2007

Underarm odour is the result of sweat or perspiration, which is produced by the sweat glands underneath the skin. Sweat glands are most active when the body is overheated because as the sweat evaporates into the air, the skin cools off to some extent. One type of sweat gland abundant in the underarm area, the apocrine glands, also secretes perspiration when a person is excited, scared or sexually aroused. After puberty, the sweat secreted from these glands can stain clothing and when metabolized by bacteria, emits a strong odour.

Most people are able to minimize underarm sweating and odour by washing with lukewarm water and mild soap at least once a day — and more frequently in hot, humid weather or after intense exercise. Some women find that washing with an antibacterial soap or applying a topical antibiotic to the armpit can also reduce odour.

Antiperspirant sprays, creams, or roll-ons reduce the amount of perspiration, and deodorants can cover up odour with a more pleasant fragrance. Some women prefer to use perfumes or colognes under their arms in lieu of deodorants. All of these products can irritate the skin if used immediately after shaving the armpits, however. As for shaving itself, while it plays no role in reducing the amount of perspiration, it can prevent the accumulation of pungent sweat in the hair. If these measures are inadequate, stronger antiperspirants are available by prescription. In severe cases, the sweat glands can be surgically removed from the armpits.
